MY FATHER’S HOUSE: Glimpses of the Glory

‘Every Christian,’ writes Timothy Cross, ‘has a “homing instinct’’ for heaven,’ and he is right. It ought to follow, then, that the more we know about heaven, this side, the better will be our preparation for it.
In making any journey, we need to be sure as to where we are going. Being wise means knowing that God is preparing us for another world where his light will shine on us as it never did in this one. Revelation 7:9-17 is meant as a heart-warming picture of heaven and tells us a great deal about the international community that is to be found there. It informs us not only who they are, but where they have come from, the means by which they came, and their present employment. Who would not want such glimpses of the glory, save those whose hearts are unprepared for heaven?
Timothy Cross has written a book in which he gives us ‘glimpses of glory’ – not merely to satisfy our mental curiosity, but as all good theology is meant to do, to warm our hearts and make us long for it ourselves. C.S. Lewis described heaven as a delight compared with which all the raptures of earthly lovers are mere milk and water! Timothy Cross has managed to unpack these verses in Revelation and give us a foretaste of the ‘delight’ that is in store for God’s children.
It is a delight to read what he ahs written, and a privilege to comment his work. ‘I see myself now at the end of my journey,’ said Bunyan’s Mr. Stand-fast, as he stood halfway into Jordan’s water. ‘The thoughts of what I am going to, and of the conduct that waits for me on the other side, doth lie as a glowing coal at my heart … I have formerly live by hearsay and faith, but now I go where I shall live by sight, and shall be with him in whose company I delight myself.’ Such a ‘glowing coal’ is what this book is all about. The author brings to this … a freshness of writing which is very appealing … A refreshing and challenging book for all who have been travelling along the pathway of faith or for those who long to begin such a journey to the heavenly home (Our Inheritance, Protestants Today).
He writes clearly of such truths without apologising or hiding behind the supposed ignorance of the modern man … In the simple lessons drawn much of value is to be found about the Saviour’s love and God’s providential and personal care (Believer’s Magazine).
Timothy Cross’ writing talent is a heaven-sent gift (South Wales Echo, 8/7/93).
